1. Baby shows no interest in new book
I observed that almost every time when I introduce a new book to my little one, she shows all the signs of no interest - looks away, grabs other books, fidgets around, etc. I try to capture her interest by pointing to nice pictures or going into my 'play-acting mode' by mimicking sounds or actions as led by the story. I do not use any force, but I will persist by showing the book every other day. Soon, my baby starts to like the book. Some become her favorites and ends up with me reading it everyday.
So don't give up easily if your baby does not take to a book at the first try!
2. Baby wants to bite book
Personally I do not allow my baby to bite books. She can bite her cloth books, teether, toys, etc. Just not books. I wanted to teach my baby from young that books are meant to be enjoyed with eyes. Having said that, it does not mean she didn't try to grab and bite them! I just kept telling her no and held the book a little further away.
3. Baby doesn't want to sit still to read
I guess this is normal when starting to read to an older baby. Baby is mobile and ready to explore the world, while he/she has not yet learnt to enjoy books. Start with short reading sessions, like a few minutes and stop before baby gets disgruntled. That way it keeps baby wanting more. Then slowly extend the reading sessions.
As with any habit, it is an advantage to start reading early when baby is small (2-3 months old) and not so mobile/assertive, and by the time baby grows bigger he/she will look forward to sitting down for reading sessions.
Another way to try is read to baby in the car when the baby is strapped down into the car seat, having not much to do anyway. If you wonder whether your baby will get car sick this way, don't worry, research shows babies don't get car sick until they get older.
4. Baby is rough with books
Invest in some board books for the younger baby if you want your books to last and not having to punctuate your reading sessions with efforts to stop baby from tearing book pages.

Amazon.com Review
Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.
Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two.

Amazon.com Review
There is a house,
a napping house,
where everyone is sleeping.
"Everyone," in this case is a snoring granny, a dreaming child, a dozing dog, a snoozing cat, a slumbering mouse... and a wakeful flea! Uh-oh. Looks like the napping house won't be napping for long. With their very own brand of humor, Audrey Wood and Don Wood create an appealing bedtime book compatible with Margaret Wise Brown's classic Goodnight Moon. This small, square board book, with its rhythmic, repetitive text and witty pictures in shades of ever-brightening blues and greens (as the night turns to day), is sure to be a winner with preschool insomniacs. The sleepy household congregates on Granny's bed, slowly building a very relaxed pile of bodies in shifting positions. Young readers will enjoy tracking the critters as they make their way, one by one, to the bed--and then guessing what will happen when the wakeful flea joins the heap. Be sure to look for this author-illustrator team's other hilarious collaborative efforts, including Piggies and Silly Sally. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter --

The Magical Garden of Claude Monet (RM29.90)
Price RM29.90
Product details:
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: Barron's Educational Series (August 17, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0764138553
ISBN-13: 978-0764138553
Product Dimensions: 11.2 x 9.8 x 0.2 inches
Amazon rating: 5 stars
An engaging introduction to Monet's later work, featuring his gardens at Giverny. Based on a visit to the artist by a girl who turns out to be the daughter of Impressionist Berthe Morisot and a niece of Edouard Manet, The Magical Garden effortlessly combines artistic fancy with biographical fact. The simple story of a city child's day in the country is brought to life through clear text and vibrant gouache illustrations that blend seamlessly to provide an ideal introduction to Monet's temperament, work habits, and aesthetic. Anholt pulls off a deft illustrative trick, using his own fluid style to capture the flavor of many of Monet's most frequently reproduced works. Several illustrations are successful combinations of photo reproductions of Monet's paintings overlaid with Anholt's drawings of the artist and Julie. Particularly impressive is the foldout spread that depicts Monet, Julie, and her dog gliding across the lake in a small boat. The figures are incorporated into Monet's masterpiece Waterlilies: Morning. Perfect for children not old enough to enjoy the detail and comparatively intricate plot of Christina Bjork's Linnea in Monet's Garden (R & S, 1987), this volume also includes a page of biographical information about Monet. My Review:
I love this book! Really, really beautiful pictures, but it's Monet, so that's no surprise. Charming story. As a parent, I would not hesitate to use this book to introduce my child to fine art. I already bought 1 to keep for my baby :)
